This holiday season, sales are set to reach $1.1 trillion, according to a survey by Deloitte, and the typical shopper expects to spend more than $1,000 on gifts and other seasonal purchases, according to the National Retail Federation.
Much of this money will be spent during Black Friday, when researchers expect more than 100 million people will shop online and in stores. If you plan to be one of them, it's important to know what products will be for sale at the best prices of the year.
"Historically, we've seen more deals on Thanksgiving than Black Friday or Cyber Monday," says Michael Bonebright of DealNews.com. But "many Thanksgiving door-busters do carry over to Black Friday."
Here's what experts say are the best things to buy on the day after Thanksgiving:
Flatscreen TVs are a Black Friday sale door-buster tradition, and this year is no different, says Kristin McGrath, shopping expert at Offers.com. "You can expect an easy $100 to $300 off on 4K sets, and even discounts of $500 plus on certain larger-screen models over 60 inches." For example, a Samsung 70" LED TV will be discounted from $899.99 to 549.99 at Best Buy. And a Sony 55" Android Smart LED TV will be marked down from $999.95 to $498 at Walmart.
But, McGrath warns, don't get "blinded by a [low] price and a big screen," as many of the deals will be on lower quality products.
You could also hold off until Cyber Monday. Some experts predict that the lowest priced televisions will be given that day, December 2, according to data from Adobe.
"Black Friday has long been the best day of the year to buy most electronics, and 2019 is no different," Bonebright says. This includes smart home devices and home speakers like the Amazon Echo and Google Home.
At Target, you can find an Amazon Echo Dot for $22, a 56% discount off its regular price, while an Amazon Echo will be 40% off, at $59.99. If you're looking for a Google Home Mini, Walmart is selling one for $19, 24% less than it original price. At Kohl's, you can get a Google Home Max smart speaker for $249.99, $50 less than its original price.
Smartphones tend to have some of their best deals of the year on Black Friday. "Target and Walmart have a tradition of offering the newest-generation phones and second-newest-generation phones with up to $400 in-store gift cards," McGrath says. For example, at Target, an iPhone 11 comes with a $200 gift card and a Samsung Galaxy comes with a $400 gift card.
"You'll see some of the best pricing of the year on the PS4, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, and, hopefully this year, the Nintendo Switch," McGrath says. At Target, an Xbox One X will be discounted from $499.99 to $349.99 and select Xbox One controllers will be discounted from $59.99 to $39.99.
If you're looking for deals on Apple products, don't go to the Apple Store. Instead, try other major retailers like Walmart, Best Buy, or Target.
Walmart will have deals on Beats (a subsidiary of Apple), including Beats Solo3 Wireless Headphones for $100 off, bringing the price from $299.99 to $199.99. iPads and iPad Pros at Best Buy will be $80 to $100 less than their regular retail price, depending on the model. At Target, an Apple Watch Series 3 will be discounted from $199.99 to $169.99, and AirPods with a charging case will be marked down from $199.99 to $144.99.
Deep discounts will most likely be offered on products like washer-dryer sets and kitchen appliances on Black Friday. At Lowe's, a Frigidaire fridge will be discounted from $1,300 to $850.
But don't just look for price reductions, McGrath says. Many stores will offer perks like free installation or discounts for buying appliances in multiples. Lowe's is also offering free delivery for appliance purchases of more than $369.
Smaller kitchen appliances will also be on sale. For example, at Walmart, an Instant Pot will be discounted from $99.99 to $64.99.
