My 5 side hustles bring in thousands each month: Here’s my best advice for creating multiple income streams

Shortly after I started my first business Bridesmaid for Hire as a side hustle in 2014, I was laid off from my full-time job. That inspired me to take the leap to be my own boss, and it taught me how important it is to have multiple streams of income

Especially if your business is built on you being the service, like if you have a consulting or coaching side hustle, developing other ways to make money is key if you want to scale and avoid burnout

Over the last seven years, I've started a variety of side hustles under the Bridesmaid for Hire umbrella. I offer my in-person services, and I benefit from other revenue streams, such as online courses, books, and speech writing. This way, if something unexpected happens, like a personal health issue or a change within my industry that affects my income, I am prepared to make up the shortfall.

When the pandemic paused a lot of weddings, the income I generated from my main business took a hit. But the other side hustles I had developed alongside the Bridesmaid for Hire brand were able to bring in money and that allowed me to stay afloat during a difficult time. 

Today I have five different income streams that bring thousands of dollars each month. Here is my best advice.

Look for ways to create passive income 

When my business first started, I only offered services that involved me getting on a plane and going to someone's wedding as their bridesmaid. After working 50 weddings a year for a few years, I decided to create another branch of my business that would allow me to create passive income and didn't involve as much of my time.

I decided to offer three different courses to my audience based on problems they had in their wedding journey that I could solve without physically being present at their wedding. To find these problems, I started collecting common inquiries from people who reached out and asked if we offered specific services like wedding planning on a budget, maid-of-honor strategy, and more.

I surveyed my audience with polls on social media and emailed 30,000 of my email subscribers a survey to take to see if these new courses I was going to offer would appeal to them.

With the courses I typically spend about a week writing the material, filming the videos, and designing the user experience. I do this using a platform called Thinkific. After that week of work, aside from setting up some marketing materials to promote it through email, on social media, and with a few Google ads, I'm hands off. 

Throughout the year, I offer anywhere between 3 to 5 courses to my audience, which bring in a couple thousand dollars each month. 

Focus on reaching different audiences

About a year into Bridesmaid for Hire, I was receiving around 15 emails a week from people asking if I offered any maid-of-honor toast writing services. After a year of saying that we didn't, I decided to use my skills as a writer to create two packages for this side hustle. 

While this service is featured underneath the Bridesmaid for Hire brand, it serves a completely different audience.

I offer one package where people can hire me to write their speech, and then I provide another where I write their speech and give them help with public speaking. To grow this service, which brings in a few thousand dollars each month, I've hired other writers to help as well, and they earn 50% of the price.

Lean into passions and existing skills

Another way I've made a side hustle out of my love for writing is by using my knowledge as a professional bridesmaid to write books and articles for websites on wedding trends, bridesmaid mistakes, and real-life stories from the hundreds of weddings I've worked. 

I've written two books so far and while that is a time consuming process, after they are published, books can become an ongoing passive income stream. One was published by Simon & Schuster and the other I self-published. 

While the royalties I receive from the publisher aren't very much, I do generate a varying amount of money every month from the book I self-published. 

And as a freelance wedding writer, I often pitch publications that I have relationships with in the bridal space and write 3 to 5 articles for them every month. The income from this side hustle can vary from month to month.

Develop partnerships with like-minded platforms 

Over the years, I've built up an audience on social media. Today I have close to 25,000 followers on Instagram and an email list of over 60,000 subscribers. And brands and businesses have reached out to work together on creating content, promoting their content, or reviewing their businesses in sponsored posts or videos.

Most of the time, these brands find me through press, social media, or word of mouth and when they reach out, I send them a media kit I made for free on Canva.com showcasing my reach with my website, social media, and email audiences, along with sample prices, which range from $250 for a few social media posts to over $2,000 for access to my entire audience. 

From there, we work out an agreement about what kind of content they'd like me to do. Partnerships can bring in anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a month.

Use what you've learned to to help others grow their businesses

I've been running the main business, Bridesmaid for Hire, for over seven years and as a result, a lot of people reach out via email or on social media to ask for advice or consulting on how to grow their business, start a business, or even break into the wedding industry.

A side hustle I started four years ago was offering one-on-one coaching or business consulting where I audited their existing business to strategize and figure out new opportunities.

Costs for these services vary depending on how much help the person needs. I created a landing page for people to learn more about how the coaching works. While this is a service that is time intensive and requires me to be available, it can pull in a few thousand dollars a month.

My main business is still what I spend the most time focusing on, and it brings in the most money every single month. But having five other side hustles operating underneath the brand allows me to tap into other passions, offer other products and services that can reach new audiences, and create new sources of passive income.
